"I like to imagine my mind as a comfortable hotel, or a dorm, with individual rooms for characters. And some rooms might be locked or boarded up because a muse is gone for good, some might look as though nobody ever came to claim their room at all, and some might look as though they've been lived in for years....
If nothing else, it's amusing to imagine the hijinks. Older characters who've been around for a while being the ones to help acclimatize the new muses, flaming arguments between conflicting personalities or people from the same canon, the inevitable "too loud" complaints....yeah, I like the idea of my mind as a hotel-dorm."
